ARE TATTOOS ADDICTIVE? - Authent/Ink

For those of you who are tattooed or know someone who has tattoos, you’ll know that you rarely just get one. Usually after the tattoo has fully healed (or sometimes right after the artist finishes tattooing) you think to yourself, “you know what, I could get another.” Over the past 11 years, we’ve seen many a promises to parents broken, and many, many people go from 0 to 10 to 100 in exactly this way.

While tattoo ink doesn’t contain any addictive substances, the process of getting tattooed releases adrenaline and endorphins into your bloodstream which can give you a sense of euphoria- kind of like a runner’s high but you get a sweet, permanent badge of honour afterwards. You may not feel euphoric during the tattoo, but once those machines stop buzzing, your body releases the happy hormones as it realises that it’s going to be okay.

Maybe this thrill is what makes getting tattooed such an addictive experience? But maybe theres more to it than a biological response to pain–after all, we don’t all chase the feeling of getting hurt on a day to day basis.

So what could it be? Here’s a few thoughts that we have on the topic.

Self expression and personal sentiment

Beyond the physical sensations, tattoos often hold personal significance, marking milestones, memories, or aspects of one’s identity. The act of choosing and receiving a tattoo can provide a sense of control and self-expression, which can be empowering and emotionally satisfying. Having images of things that resonate with you, on you, can also give you a confidence boost! Many of our clients have described how their tattoos have helped them feel more confident in their body, or given them strength as they’re reminded of the tattoo’s meaning.

The lead up and ritual

The exciting, restless days leading up to your tattoo appointment could also be a reason why tattoos are addictive. Counting down the days, hours or minutes until your appointment, while on your way to the studio and even as you’re on the bed, waiting for the artist to finish setting up, can be equally nerve-wracking and thrilling. It’s something about the expectation of the pain to come battling with the knowledge that soon, soon, you’ll have an awesome design painted across your skin forever.

This all completely normal, but if those nerves get to be too much, there are a few things we recommend to help calm down before and throughout the appointment. Making a playlist for your tattoo session or choosing what show/movie to binge, making sure you have your charger, earphones, cash, a sugary snack or drink-they all help!

Personal strength and self improvement

Tattoos hurt, we can’t deny that. So another reason on why we keep coming back is to test our resilience. It’s super rewarding when you’ve sat through a painful session and come out victorious, not tapping out or complaining. For large projects, some people physically and mentally prepare by taking cold showers and exercising to make sure their mental endurance is high and they are adept to discomfort. Whilst it’s definitely not necessary it does lead to self improvement and makes you feel better about yourself. And look better too!

Please consume art responsibly!
