Mertim Gokalp is a Sydney based artist of Istanbul origin. He has completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts (Painting). Since his graduation in 2008, he has been working as a fulltime artist, specialized in figurative compositions and large-scale realistic portraits. Mertim’s paintings have been displayed in many countries including the USA, Germany and Hong Kong.
Mertim has moved to Sydney in 2009, and his strong contribution to the contemporary Australian art scene has awarded Mertim with a distinguished talent visa by the Australian Government, allowing him to live and work in Australia.
His works have been displayed in major art prizes such as the Archibald, the Doug Moran Art, Salon des Refuses, Black Swan Art Prize and the Glencore Art Prize. In 2017, he has become the winner of both the Hunters Hill Art Prize and the Kennedy Art prize. In 2018, he has won the Hunters Hill Art Prize two years in a row.
Since 2018, Mertim has been working as a fulltime tattoo artist in Sydney. He specializes in black & white and color realism and portraits. He enjoys creating narrative compositions that involves elements from mythology and history. He also has a special interest in cinematography.
