Use this cream, use this product, etc... When it comes to what you should do it's pretty divisive. What's pretty universal are these 4 things: - [How a cover up can change your life](https://www.authentink.com/how-a-cover-up-can-change-your-life/): We really have to shine some light on how cover ups can change someone’s life! We have 3 guest artists that will be working in the studio soon, all with spectacularly distinct styles. - [Completed Kintaro sleeve by Horikashi](https://www.authentink.com/completed-kintaro-sleeve-by-horikashi/): We mark the end of a journey (and a start of a new one) for Ben today as Horikashi has completed his Kintaro sleeve. In 2024, Ben came in with fresh skin and an idea. He was drawn to the imagery of Kintaro, the Golden Boy of Japanese folklore. He had a consultation with Horikashi in Sydney and the tattoo begun shortly thereafter. - [January look book](https://www.authentink.com/january-look-book/): Our first look book of 2026! It's been a long month--January always is. But the long days have leant themselves to fun, new projects, and the continuation of many ongoing projects. Take a look at what we got up to this past January! - [Horisumi Wait list and information Update](https://www.authentink.com/horisumi-wait-list-and-information-update/): Greetings, just a little update about my current wait times, availability and everything else relating to my personal tattoo work. - [HORIKASHI FEBRUARY GUEST SPOT](https://www.authentink.com/horikashi-february-guest-spot/): Japanese tattooing master and guest artist Horikashi will be back in Sydney and tattooing at Authentink Studio between February 7th and February 24th. It's been two years since his last visit and in the meantime he's travelled around the globe, tattooing all kinds of people using the ancient art of Japanese tattooing by hand, tebori. - [TATTOOING UPDATE: Roel’s chest piece](https://www.authentink.com/tattooing-update-roels-chest-piece/): Back in 2025, Horisumi finished up long-time friend and client Roel's snake arm sleeves. - [Flash UPDATES](https://www.authentink.com/flash-updates/): Our artists have been busy lately, drawing up heaps of new flash to catch your eye! - [DECEMBER LOOKBOOK](https://www.authentink.com/december-lookbook-tattoo-art-2025/): Wrapping up 2025, we have the last look book of the year. We weren't able to take as many pictures this month due to the varied business hours and schedules over the holiday period, but there are still some good shots! - [Samurai and Koi Sleeve Start](https://www.authentink.com/samurai-koi-sleeve-start-tattoo-progress/): Min is in the process of working on a samurai and koi leg sleeve. At the moment they're two sessions deep and have completed the line work and have started with shading in the background. Take a look at all the progress they've made so far! - [32 SNAKE TATTOOS](https://www.authentink.com/32-snake-tattoos/): Snakes, snakes, snakes! Ever the popular choice in tattoo, symbolising power, transformation, rebirth and renewal. Sleek, sexy, fierce--snakes are all of the above and more. Being the year of the snake in the Chinese zodiac cycle, this article is particularly well timed. If you're searching for inspiration, an artist to bring your own tattoo to life, or just interested in seeing some good art, you're in the right place! We've got a line-up of 32 sick snake tattoos, plus a heap of drawings and now available snake-themed flash from our very own artists. - [FLORAL WRAP TATTOO](https://www.authentink.com/floral-wrap-tattoo/): Recently we had the pleasure of having long-term client Alyssa in to complete a floral vine tattoo that wraps around the arm, ending delicately beneath the collarbone. Or--initially this was the plan, but they ended up adding a second, smaller vine across Alyssa's right collarbone for balance.  Lily did an incredible job on this project. Take a look at her progress over a few sessions, or skip to the end to see the completed tattoo. - [chrysanthemum projects completed](https://www.authentink.com/chrysanthemum-projects-completed/): Today we have two different chrysanthemum projects, recently completed, to showcase--from stencilling to line work to the completed works. The first is Lauren's chrysanthemum and snake sleeve done in Ian's style, and the second is my own chrysanthemum tattoo on the calf. That's right, you heard me! This one is my own tattoo done by Pong, which is why all of the pictures of it are taken at a strange angle. Forgive that kindly. - [november lookbook](https://www.authentink.com/november-lookbook/): In November, the person who takes most of the look book pictures (me!) was away a few times (my bad!), so this month we had less pictures to choose from to showcase. Though the photos are not as top-notch as we would like, the projects speak for themselves. Scroll to see what we got up to in November! - [AUSTRALIAN TATTOO EXPO 2025](https://www.authentink.com/australian-tattoo-expo-2025/): Horisumi and head apprentice Bonzai will be attending the Australian Tattoo Expo held in Melbourne this year. They'll be in attendance all three dates of the expo, from the 5th to the 7th of December. During that time Horisumi has a few clients lined up, and will be showcasing the traditional Tebori method of tattooing. It's going to be a fun weekend! - [Recent B&G and colour realism by Max](https://www.authentink.com/max-bg-colour-realism-tattoos/): Max is one of our well-known senior staff, with just over 16 years of experience in the industry. He's a well-versed and talented artist specialising in fineline, oriental, tribal, and realism tattoos, but today we'll be showcasing some of his recent b&g realism and colour realism. Quite a few are pop-culture  themed, but we also have a beautiful Mother Mary tattoo to show off. - [cover-up in progress](https://www.authentink.com/cover-up-in-progress/): Coco is in the midst of a cover-up project, and it's going well! They've done one session at the moment, and are looking to organise the second and final session sometime in the next few weeks. - [CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR TRADING HOURS](https://www.authentink.com/christmas-new-year-trading-hours-2/): Hey everyone! We've finalised our schedule for the end of the year: - [NOW HIRING: MANGA/ANIME ARTIST](https://www.authentink.com/hiring-manga-anime-tattoo-artist/): We're currently looking for a fresh new face to join our team of passionate and hardworking artists and crew. We're interested in an artist with a flexible skill set and a specialisation in manga and anime tattoos, to join the studio on a full time basis. Existing clientele is preferred but not a requirement. - [PEACOCK TATTOO WITH KAEDE](https://www.authentink.com/peacock-tattoo-with-kaede/): Today apprentice Kaede is taking on a big project, a colourful custom peacock for our friend Grimm. This tattoo is going on the back of the right calf, and measures out to about 22cm. Luckily we've been able to grab pictures at every stage of the tattooing process, have a peek below! - [E-SHOP UPDATE](https://www.authentink.com/e-shop-update-japanese-oni-hats/): This post is going to be a quick one! Take a look at the new hats we've dropped on the Studio's e-shop. Featuring the iconic Japanese figure of the oni, these hats will make a colourful, eye-catching addition to your collection. Practical, simple, and perfect for the upcoming hot season. - [October lookbook](https://www.authentink.com/october-lookbook/): It's been quite a busy October, and as such we've got a line-up of photos of projects throughout the month. We slacked off a little when it came to capturing completed works, so many of the pictures in this month's look book are of works in progress. Take a look at what we've had going on! - [Horisumi and the story of Irezumi and Tebori an evening hosted by Authentink](https://www.authentink.com/horisumi-irezumi-tebori-japanese-tattoo-seminar/): Join us for an evening with Horisumi Kian Forreal featuring a seminar that take us through the rich history of Japanese tattooing, the symbolism and culture of Traditional Irezumi and an in-person tebori (hand poke) tattoo demonstration with a Q & A. Limited seats, refreshments provided.  - [Project updates: Chrysanthemum sleeve, Koi coverup, and more!](https://www.authentink.com/project-updates-chrysanthemum-sleeve-koi-coverup/): Tattooing large scale tattoos is always a pleasure. It's a long process, but a worthy one. Personally, I don't think enough people talk about the process--there's such a focus on finishing tattoos, and showing off the final, perfect product. - [Denham’s backpiece: almost done!](https://www.authentink.com/denhams-samurai-backpiece-update/): Denham's samurai back piece is 5 years in the making and only has about 2 hours to go. Life circumstances made it so that a long break was taken partway through the tattoo, but in the last few months Horisumi has made much progress. All freehand with tebori shading, this first tattoo is a prime example of 'go big or go home'. - [Elbow banger by Suraj](https://www.authentink.com/project-update-elbow-mandala-tattoo-suraj/): Yesterday Suraj took on an awesome mandala tattoo, positioned directly over the inner elbow. What makes this one special is the style of shading; to make up this tattoo, Suraj tattooed hundreds of teeny-tiny dots, one-by-one, over his client's skin. Tedious, yes--but worth it! The end affect is so smooth and satisfying. - [FLASH TATTOOS FROM OUR ARTISTS](https://www.authentink.com/authentink_flash/): So you're wanting a tattoo but don't know what to get? We have you covered with some flash from our artists. Prices vary depending on size, location so you can ask the respective artists or one of our friendly staff members for help! - [SLEEVE START WITH MIN](https://www.authentink.com/sleeve-starts-with-min-and-ian/): Recently, Min has taken on some sleeve projects, and we've been lucky enough to catch some progress shots! All line work at the moment, with colour and shading soon to come. - [September Lookbook](https://www.authentink.com/project-updates-sleeve-starts-min-ian/): As per usual, here's a look at some tattoos and progress pictures taken throughout September! It's been a busy month, and we're hoping to carry this momentum through the rest of Spring into Summer. - [FINELINE TATTOO inspiration](https://www.authentink.com/50-fineline-tattoos/): As the weather begins warming up, we're having a flood of clients coming in with hopes of building their summer body. Some clients come in knowing exactly what they want, and all we have to do is print out a stencil and get tattooing. Other clients are more uncertain, preferring to flick through flash designs or work with artists to flesh out an idea. If you're in the second category, this post is for you! We've got a heap of tattoos at hand, focusing specifically on fine line to serve as inspiration for your next tattoo. - [GUEST ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT: CRIMGE IS BACK!](https://www.authentink.com/guest-artist-announcement-crimge-is-back/): Back in August of this year, Polish tattoo artist Crimge spent a little over two weeks guesting at the studio. While here, she took on a heap of awesome projects for equally as interesting and fun clients, bringing to the studio a style out of the ordinary but not unwelcome! - [DISCOUNTED APPRENTICE FLASH AVAILABLE](https://www.authentink.com/discounted-apprentice-flash-available/): This week, we're bringing to your attention some flash drawn up by our newest apprentice Kaede. Despite only being in the industry for a short time so far, Kaede's passion, drive, and effort to carve out a niche and personal style  is evident in every new artwork. - [Steph’s completed back piece](https://www.authentink.com/stephs-completed-back-piece/): What started as a nukibori (no background) backpiece has, after years,  now been transformed through the completion of full traditional background. Tattooed by Horisumi, Steph's backpiece accounts for hours upon hours of work in the making, and there was no shortage of laughter, tears, and a few rough healing patches throughout it. Yet, that colour has barely budged, and still remains bold and true even now. Kudos to Steph for making it through! - [AUGUST LOOKBOOK](https://www.authentink.com/august-lookbook/): During this last month we've had quite a bit going on in Authentink Studio! Here's a little peek into the every-day life of our artists, featuring tattoos they've completed, a few Studio-wide shots, and activities done in their spare time. - [LADIES NIGHT: OCTOBER 17TH](https://www.authentink.com/ladies-night-october-17th/): Authentink is pleased to announce that we are hosting a Ladies Night! Pencil October 17th 7:30pm-late in your calendar. The end of 2023 saw the studio take Kaede on as its newest apprentice. Loyal clients of the studio may recognise Kaede as the hardworking individual often busy with helping our full time artists stock and reset their workstations, greeting clients at the door, and with keeping the studio neat and tidy as the days sludge on. - [30 dragon tattoos](https://www.authentink.com/30-dragon-tattoos/): There we have it, 30 different dragon tattoos to give you some ideas and inspiration for your own future tattoo! This definitely isn't an exhaustive list--if we were to go through each and every dragon tattoo done at this studio, this post would go on forever. - [GUEST ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT: COCO](https://www.authentink.com/guest-artist-announcement-coco/): This August, Authentink will be joined by Slovakian artist Coco. With just over five years of experience tattooing and a background in contemporary art, Coco brings a fresh perspective to the industry by producing custom works that draw from folk culture and play with traditional motifs. Coco's work is ornamental, bold, and subtle--a seemingly contradictory set of descriptions, but very true! Through experimentation, careful consideration and extensive understanding of the shape and form of the body, Coco has achieved a satisfying, balanced and broad portfolio. In her own words, she approaches tattooing like designing jewellery, which is quite a beautiful way to put it! - [July recap](https://www.authentink.com/july-recap/): In July, we had an incredible array of clients and projects that came into the studio. Scroll down to see our favourite ongoing, completed, and one-shot pieces from this month, along with some action shots! - [Tattoo lookbook: Kai’s work for Steve](https://www.authentink.com/steves-tattooing-journey/): Recently, Kai has taken on a project of epic proportions with one very dedicated client. In the past few months, Kai has been steadily chipping away at Steve's arms, legs, and back--with possibly more to come! The theme is black and grey, both realism and stylised realism working alongside one another to bring a cohesiveness to Steve's look. Unfortunately we don't have many progress pictures, but we do have the completed images of each element. Scroll down to see what's up! - [KARSTEN’S BACKPIECE: TATTOOING Journey](https://www.authentink.com/karstens-backpiece-tattooing-journey/): Last week, we posted the final action shots from Karsten's freehand snake and  Hanya back piece. This week, we've got some milestone shots--from the initial session all the way through to lining and shading. - [Bonzai Flash Update](https://www.authentink.com/bonzai-flash-update/): Lately, Bonzai has been keeping busy drawing and painting new flash for your viewing pleasure. All of these designs are inspired by Japanese tattooing or taken from Japanese mythology, and given a new life in Bonzai's own style. If you're interested in seeing the process of drawing and painting flash, or curious about the symbolism behind these images, check out Bonzai's instagram page (@bonzai_tattooer) for time-lapses and explanation videos. It's clear to see Bonzai's passion for art and dedication to the craft as he delves into the meanings, histories, and interpretations of classic and lesser-known symbols in Japanese art. ## Pages - [Authentink Photo Contest](https://www.authentink.com/authentink-photo-contest/): Authentink Tattoo Photo Contest - [Tattoo Planning Session & Booking Form](https://www.authentink.com/meta-form/): Use this form to request your free tattoo planning session with one of our artists, we offer video tattoo planning sessions and in-person at the studio tattoo planning sessions, both free of charge, no obligation. Tebori means to 'hand carve', the skin being tattooed not unlike a wood block in preparation for making a print. Accordingly it is thought that many woodblock printmakers and carvers from the old Edo Japanese were also tattoo artists in their spare time as the skill sets required for both had a lot of overlap, Kuniyoshi being a prime example of a famous Edo era artist thought to have been a horishi. - [Work Opportunities](https://www.authentink.com/contact-us/work-opportunities/) - [Intern. Apprentice. Deshi](https://www.authentink.com/intern-apprentice-deshi/): Kian ‘Horisumi’ Forreal is currently accepting applications for shop intern with a pathway to being a Deshi (apprentice) at Authentink Studio for the future. - [Japanese Flower Tattoos](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/japanese-flower-tattoos/): Choosing the floral component to go with your Japanese tattoo can be quite hard when you educate yourself on the meaning and symbology behind each motif. There are some basic pairings that go together, they just work. Like tiger and bamboo. They are a harmonious match. But what about everything else? - [The Sakura / Cherry Blossom](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/the-sakura-cherry-blossom/): The Sakura, or cherry blossom features heavily in traditional Japanese tattoos. The Sakura tree blooms in Spring, and the blossoms appear en masse and are an extremely beautiful sight to see. The transience of the blossoms, the extreme beauty and quick death, has often been associated with mortality and for this reason, cherry blossoms are richly symbolic and are featured  in almost all forms of Japanese art as they depict a glorious life  and sudden death, popularly linked to the lives and deaths of warriors and samurai. During WWII, Japanese pilots even painted cherry blossoms on the side of their planes, and took branches of the trees with them when embarking on suicide missions. The symbolism was then taken further to be that the falling petals of the blossom in art came to symbolise sacrifice, youthfulness, fragility and grace. - [The Japanese Peony Tattoos](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/the-peony-tattoos/): The Peony is considered the best of flowers and is known as the King of flowers in Japan. In short it means elegance and wealth. With it’s large and spreading petals, which are delicately curled at the edges, the peony has been called “the rose without thorns”. Although often depicted in tattoo imagery in deep red, it is today also cultivated in many other colours. - [The Koi Fish](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/the-koi-fish-tattoo/): The koi fish arrived from China in Japan in the early 1600’s as prized pets of the rich aristocrats. Considered ‘living flowers’ bred for the unusual shapes and color. Now almost everyone has some in their pond in japan. - [Raijin](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/raijin-tattoo/): Raijin is the god of lightning, thunder and storms in Japanese mythology and is a common motif in Japanese art and tattoo culture. His name is derived from the Japanese words rai, meaning thunder and shin, meaning god. He is typically depicted as a demon looking spirit, beating drums to create thunder, usually with the tomoe symbol drawn on the drums. - [The Hannya Mask](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/hannya-mask/): The Hannya mask originates from Japanese Noh Theatre, pictured above. It represents a jealous female demon. It is characterised by two sharp, bull-like horns, metallic eyes and a leering mouth. The Hannya mask, used in the play, portrays a woman whose soul has become possessed by a demon because of jealousy or obsession. The character wearing the Hannya mask is portraying a demonic and dangerous part in theatre, but at the same time, sorrowful and tormented, displaying the complexity of human emotions. When looking straight on at the mask, it appears angry and frightening, however when tiled down slightly, it can almost look sorrowful, as if its crying. - [Foo “Dog” or Shi Shi](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/foo-dog-or-shi-shi-tattoos/): Foo “Dogs” are actually Guardian Lions. They are also sometimes called Buddha Lions. They are usually pictured in pairs, one male and one female. The male has his paw resting on wish-fulfilling jewel that symbolises Buddhist wisdom, and supremacy over the world. The female has her paw resting on a cub, which symbolises protection and nurture. As a pair, they represent Yin and Yang. As statues, placed out the front of homes and offices, they serve to ward off evil spirits. As tattoos, they serve as protectors and often indicate a courageous person with heroic aspirations. - [The Phoenix / Hō-ō](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/the-phoenix/): The phoenix is said to be a pheasant / peacock hybrid. The Japanese or Chinese phoenix bares very little resemblance or meaning to the Western Phoenix.  It features a pheasants neck, a cocks comb, long tail feathers of a peacock, legs of a crane, mouth of a parrot. It’s plumage represents the five colours associated with the five virtues; black, white, red, green yellow; benevolence, purity, propriety, wisdom and gentleness. - [Japanese Dragon Tattoo](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/japanese-dragon-tattoo/): Dragons are an ancient symbol found in mythologies in cultures from all over the world. - [Testimonials](https://www.authentink.com/testimonials/) - [Japanese Horimono](https://www.authentink.com/japanese-horimono/) - [Tattoo Aftercare](https://www.authentink.com/tattoo-aftercare/) - [Contact Us](https://www.authentink.com/contact-us/) - [Bookings](https://www.authentink.com/bookings/) - [About Us](https://www.authentink.com/about-us/) - [Latest News & Events](https://www.authentink.com/latest-news-events/) - [Meet the Team](https://www.authentink.com/expert-tattoo-artists-in-sydney/) - [Home](https://www.authentink.com/) ## Products - [HORISUMI Embroidered Mixed lettering styles](https://www.authentink.com/shop/accessories/horisumi-embroidered-mixed-lettering-styles/): Quality trucker, Camo or baseball cap Kanji for HORI and English SUMI, makes a nice mixed style embroidered cap!  These are limited and made to order only. With countless hands and eyes, Senju Kannon reaches out to aid all beings, seeing every suffering and offering boundless mercy. In Pure Land Buddhism, Kannon stands beside Amida Nyorai, embodying compassion that complements wisdom and strength. Devotees call upon Senju Kannon for protection, healing, and guidance in times of distress. Often depicted with serene expression and radiating arms, Senju Kannon symbolizes limitless kindness and the ever-present vow to relieve all beings from suffering.  Amida Nyorai, also known as Amitābha Buddha, is the Buddha of Infinite Light and Life, central to Pure Land Buddhism. He is said to reside in the Western Pure Land (Sukhavati), a paradise where anyone who calls upon him with sincerity can be reborn, escaping suffering and reaching enlightenment. His name, “Namu Amida Butsu,” is chanted as an act of devotion and trust in his boundless compassion.
